Overview
The Department of French at Chowgule College is a pioneer and leading department in the State of Goa offering a wide range of specialized courses in French at the undergraduate level and one of its kind in South Goa. This small but vibrant department, ever since its inception in 1962, has relentlessly imparted holistic quality education to its students over the years with the sole aspiration of launching them headlong into the challenges and demands of an ever-mutating global scenario.
Students have a wide range of courses to choose from which they can pursue either as 'French Major' or 'French Minor'. The syllabus is carefully structured so as to facilitate the acquisition of both, written and spoken French for all courses. The immersion method is used to develop reading and writing skills as French is used as the medium of instruction for all courses, at all levels. The course structure is judiciously crafted so as to provide a gentle and steady upward progression in acquiring foreign language skills, both written as well as oral, as the student progresses from one semester to the next.
In a continuous bid to provide cutting edge education, the department of French constantly intensifies its efforts towards acquiring innovative techniques and new pedagogical methods for imparting training and developing the written and oral skills of the students.
Foreign language study is simply part of a very basic liberal education: to "educate" is to lead out, to lead out of confinement and narrowness and darkness. Learning a language is not just learning grammar and vocabulary; it is learning new sounds, expressions, and ways of seeing things. Therefore, the department of French endeavours to create a warm and comfortable environment in which the student can grow to learn the complexities of language. We uphold the dictum that strong language skills, particularly foreign language skills, are an asset that will promote a lifetime of effective communication and foster an environment for growth, success, security, and ultimately, prosperity.
The French department is armoured with a rich and well-equipped library abounding with literary works of authors belonging to various literary movements across the centuries. A wide range of course material for the different levels of French language acquisition, which include a wide range of manuals of learning and corresponding workbooks, are available in abundance in the state-of-the-art library. The French library provides adequate reference resources for a student who seeks additional material to enhance learning associated with the course they choose to undertake.
Our most valuable asset is our dedicated faculty who are experienced in the fields of 'French Culture and Civilisation', 'French for Tourism and Hospitality', 'Business French', 'Basic translations Skills', 'Phonetics', 'Francophone Literature', 'Drama and Poetry' and 'French Literary Criticism' and 'Creative Writing Skills'. Our sole focus is to provide step by step guidance for the purpose of acquiring spoken and written foreign language skills and developing the knowledge of the students across many fields of learning. In our unceasing endeavour to provide world class learning opportunities to the students and provide exposure to the latest learning resources available in the global pedagogical market, we ensure that our faculty are constantly developing their own pedagogical prowess through the medium of workshops, seminars, conferences and a wide range of training programmes provided by local, national and international training academies.
The department of French runs a host of skill enhancement courses that propel the possibilities of finding employment on acquiring a graduate degree. We have courses like 'French for Tourism and Hospitality', 'Business French', 'Introduction to Translation', 'Developing reading and writing Skills' and 'Listening and Speaking Skills' to name a few besides courses dedicated to the study of French Literature. The Department uses technology such as ICT and applies current trends of teaching methodology in majority of the teaching as well as the evaluation components.
We firmly believe that "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy". So, in addition to our regular academic activity, the calendar year of the department is marked by a series of activities which provide the perfect platform to the students to showcase their talents in speech, drama, music, art, cultural knowledge, use of multimedia and to dabble in French cuisine. Some of our hallmark events are “Jour de Bastille” that marks the National day of France on the 14th of July and "Soirée Française" , an evening of French Art and Culture.
From the teaching- learning point of view, we use a healthy mix of methods ranging from the traditional method to using sophisticated technology to impart training to our students and an even more interesting and innovative approach to evaluate the skills of our students.
The Students who have successfully passed the HSSC Exam with French as a subject from any Higher Secondary Board in India or students holding "Diplôme de Langue" or B1 certificate issued by Alliance Française de Paris or any equivalent course are eligible to apply for the undergraduate programme in French. Moreover, the student is expected to have keen interest in the French subject and display basic skills in written and spoken French. The student should regularly attend class as the department believes in classrooms as learning-centric units.
