Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science is a premier
educational institution in the State of Goa, offering courses at
the Graduate, Postgraduate and PhD levels
Accredited by NAAC with Grade 'A+' (CGPA of 3.27 on a 4-point scale
on the 4th cycle), it was adjudged Best Affiliated College by Goa
University at its Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2009 and was given
the Best Educational Institute award by Business Goa in 2014.
Having been conferred upon the autonomous status by University
Grants Commission in June 2014, this is the first Autonomous
College in the State of Goa.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework conducted
by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of
India for colleges across the country, our college was ranked in
the Rank Band of 101-150 in the year 2018, followed subsequently
by being in the Rank Band of 151-200 in the years 2019 and 2021.
In 2017, the college was awarded 'DBT Star College Scheme'
by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and
Technology, Government of India, being the first college in Goa
to receive grants under this prestigious scheme. Our college is
honoured with the 'Best Internship Partner' award by Goa Rugby
Union at the Goa Rugby Awards 2018. Our College is categorized
as 'Band A' institution (Rank between 06-25) in category of
"Institutes and Colleges (Govt. and Govt. Aided)" in Atal Ranking
of Institutions on Innovation Achievement(ARIIA) 2020 announced by
MHRD, Government of India, in 2020. We have also been rated at
'4.5 Star' for undertaking various activities prescribed by Innovation
Cell, Ministry of Education, Government of India to promote innovation
and start-ups in campus during the IIC Calendar Year, 2019-20.
The College has always been at the
forefront of educational innovation. In 1986, the College started a
Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Application, pioneering Computer
Science education in Goa. In 2004, the College initiated
Postgraduate programmes in Information Technology and Geography. In
subsequent years, based on prevalent societal needs, the College
introduced courses Biotechnology and Psychology at the
undergraduate level, Postgraduate diplomas in Geoinformatics, and
Human Genetics & Pathological Techniques. The College now offers
courses leading to Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Genetics,
Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Instrumentation, M.A. degrees in
Geography, Applied Economics, Hindi, Child Psychology and
Development and English as well as M.Sc. degrees in Information
Technology, Analytical Chemistry, and Geoinformatics Systems. It
also offers PhD programmes in Botany, Hindi and Geography. The
College introduced a Bachelor of Vocational course in Software
development in 2017-18 and Multimedia and Digital Filmmaking, 3D
Media and Virtual Reality-VFX, ITES (Business Processes and ERP
Operations) courses in 2018-19. To ensure that its students develop
a professional edge besides academic knowledge, the College
introduced the Honours Programme that continues to run since its
inception in 2010-2011. Today, the College has twenty-seven
Undergraduate and eight Postgraduate departments, offering a wide
variety of programmes and courses, some of which are unique to Goa.
The Chowgule Education Society has initiated
massive infrastructural development at the College. As a result, it
has state of the art infrastructure for curricular, co-curricular
and extra-curricular activities. The College added new
infrastructure over the last ten years- a science laboratory block,
multimedia-equipped auditoriums, classrooms, conference room,
campus-wide Wi-Fi network and additional computer labs. It also
added web-based virtual infrastructure for teaching-learning
(C-LAAP/Google Classrooms, C-mail, Online Library), a computerized
library and well-equipped faculty offices.
Additionally, a FIFA-accredited football ground with field turf,
multipurpose ground, gymnasium and fitness centre, sports medicine
and physiotherapy centre, open-air seating arrangements, new
canteen, well-maintained rest-rooms, spacious well-laid
four-wheeler and two-wheeler parking grounds and new administrative
offices were also built. The entire campus and the administrative
buildings have been re-engineered. Many of the science departments
have research laboratories to carry out extensive and specialized
research.
This institution also renders various services that seek
to motivate students to excel. These support services include the
Office of Information Technology, Estate Office, Student Support
Services, Tigers Sports School, Centralized Printing Facilities and
a Shopping Centre. Two prominent student guidance facilities
available at the College are Staff Advisory Programme (mentoring)
and Student Support Services. Mentoring students is an integral
part of our educational system, providing guidance and
encouragement. Mentors play a vital role in this College by
nurturing students and helping them remain connected and engaged,
thus strengthening their performance.
Student Support Services of our College has various arms
such as Writing Centre, Career & Personal Counseling Centre (CPCC),
Business English Certificate (BEC) Training, Statistical Analysis
Support Service (SASS), and Centre for Portuguese Language &
Culture (CPLC). The College recently established a Centre for
Teaching and Learning which aims to educate faculty on how to
integrate ICT in Higher Education effectively. This is done by
conducting workshops, seminars, providing them with hands-on
experience/training. The faculty also learns to innovate, implement
and share different ICT tools in teaching.
The Translation Centre is the first of its kind in Goa to
promote the growth of indigenous literature and knowledge, induce
the students to the field of translation and translation work
assignments. Collaborations with other institutions abroad and
within the nation help students at Chowgules develop a global
perspective. Thus, it has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Instituto Camoes, Portugal, under the Foreign Ministry of Portugal,
to encourage the learning of the Portuguese language and deepen the
understanding of Portuguese culture and with the University of
Porto, Portugal for academic and research collaboration. It has
international ties with educational institutions in Stockholm,
Sweden, Jayawardenapura University, Sri Lanka, Kansai University
and Waseda University, Japan and Universite De La Reunion, France.
The College also has signed an MoU with Instituto Cervantes- a body
operating under the Government of Spain and is its official centre
for language and culture.
