BEST PRACTICE OF THE DEPARTMENT

Role Play method of Teaching-Learning”

‘Role-play’is the most effective and result oriented method that is used to train and evaluatethe final learning outcomes of the students for most of the courses. The courseinstructor suggests various scenarios from the course curriculum which are tiedto the course level outcomes, as well as the programme level outcomes.

Once thestudents have understood and acquired the theoretical skills of grammar andsyntax, they are formed into groups of two or more, with a good blend of the weakand the strong. Each group has to display the ability to use the skillsacquired in practical day to day life situations by creating a dialogue andenacting the scene thereof.

Thecriteria for marking are explained to the students well in advance. Thecriteria for each oral mode of evaluation are broken into micro-elements. Thestudents have to make a conscious effort to address each criterion separatelyin order to score the maximum marks. There is transparency in this mode of assessment. With no scope for bias and subjectivity the students are convinced of theirfaults.

The ‘RolePlay Method’ is an effective and reliable yardstick of the student’sunderstanding and application skills. A set of skills are used by differentgroups to present different situations thus encouraging creativity. It helps todevelop team spirit and teaches the students the art of tolerance and cooperationand the ability to accept and learn from criticism. It teaches problem-solvingskills and how to overcome obstacles successfully. The ‘Role Play’ mode ofevaluation offers an opportunity to develop soft skills: builds up self-confidence, communication skills, posture, intonation and diction.

The ‘Role Play’method of teaching-learning is an out of the book activity which involvesplenty of animation and interaction amongst the participants and thus breaksthe mundane moroseness of a formal classroom set-up. It motivates the studentsto think and to create and most of all to share and learn, all whilst thoroughlyenjoying the entire process.
