About Programme
The world is shrinking at an unbridled pace and people are constantly displacing themselves to the different parts of the world with unprecedented rapidity. In the current scenario of constant mobility and new human encounters resulting thereof, we are left with no choice but to accept the indisputable fact that to acquire mastery over as many languages as possible is the vital need of the hour.
Language acquisition promotes cultural diversity by facilitating a greater flow of thoughts and a rich exchange of ideas thus promoting a healthy trade of cultural mindsets. Foreign languages make one more flexible and tolerant by expanding one's world view and limiting the barriers between people that cause distrust and fear. The study of foreign languages teaches and encourages respect for other peoples: it fosters an understanding of the interrelation of language and human nature.
The fact that human beings use unique and diverse methods to communicate through written and spoken language is precisely what allows us to harness our innate ability to form lasting bonds with one another. For example, in order to travel the world whether for business or pleasure, a desire and willingness to adapt to new cultures and methods and be adept in communicating with new people in various dialects are important necessities. One participates wholeheartedly and responsibly in a multicultural world if one knows another language. Being unable to communicate in a country is a kin to living with a serious impairment. It is very difficult and near impossible to adapt and get along with new people in a foreign land, sans a medium of communication.
Various studies have proved that multilingualism improves the brain's so-called executive function and the brain continues to retain an unusual youthly composition when challenged to processing several languages at a time. These gymnastics of gliding smoothly from one language to another is precisely what facilitates this form of cerebral agility.
Furthermore, by instilling a reverence for foreign languages at a young age, parents put their children miles ahead of their future competitors. Incontestably, multilingualism is a key aspect to setting up children for success in their future professional endeavours. Foreign languages provide a competitive edge in career choices. One is at a distinct advantage in the global market if one is multilingual and any hiring manager in any company in the world would tell you that the ability to speak a foreign language is a prized commodity. Learning to communicate fluently in multiple languages provides additional job security and advancement opportunities in uncertain economic times.
In brief, our language is the most important part of our being. It is important to learn as many languages and other forms of communication besides our own because it helps us to learn about other people and cultures, it fosters understanding and tolerance between different communities, it opens up doors to professional opportunities, expands the horizon of economic exchanges and it helps to break down barriers between nations.
And so, we can safely summarize the benefit of foreign language acquisition in the words of Nicholas Ostler in 'Empires of the Word':'Different languages protect and nourish the growth of different cultures, where different pathways of human knowledge can be discovered. They certainly make life richer for those who know more than one of them'.
